Tutor led.
Sixth successful year.
The group is kept small (10 max) so each writer gets a chance to air their work every second week.

You need to be writing regularly, or to have a completed screenplay which you are ready to workshop. Participants have typically completed at least one short film (or equivalent) and are working on something new: another short, a feature, or their own original TV drama series.

Writing a screenplay is a big task. Having guidance, feedback and support is essential if you want to succeed. That's what these workshops provide. The writers taking part have a wide variety of experience: everyone is familiar with the basic tennets and has written at least one script. Work is typically read out aloud, or aired through table readings after which it is given considered feedback by the group and tutor. The tutor uses aspects of work under discussion to make learning points for the whole group and from time to time, where there is demand, will focus on a particular topic, e.g. how to write and deliver a pitch, story development, structuring a pilot, believability, dialogue, etc, for part of a session.

There's no substitute for regular, intelligent feedback from a motivated and well-informed group and tutor if you want to develop your work.

Neil has written short films, features and TV drama series. He was Head of Studies at Serial Eyes in Berlin and runs the Pitch to Pilot programme at London Film School. In between writing projects he teaches writing for TV and film across the UK and abroad.

What previous participants have said about the workshops:

'The screenwriting workshops were really useful, particularly the feedback and expertise from Neil, and the table reads. It was useful to get a varied set of views on the work in progress, and have a target to meet each week.'
- Kate Muir

The feedback from Neil and the group have given me the tools and confidence to write the first draft of a three part TV series. A project I’ll begin pitching in the autumn. Neil's ability to diagnose problems and offer suggestions is formidable. I cannot recommend his workshops more highly.
- Michael Barnes

As an actor I have been exposed to a lot of scripts, but writing one is a different business. It was great to find in Neil’s Screenwriting Workshop a space to explore my writing, exchange ideas and explore other people’s process. And beyond all, I discovered how to organize my work to continue moving forward.
- Alejandro De Mesa

When I started doing Neil’s classes, I finally got into the habit of writing. The pressure to turn up and present was just right. And the atmosphere was critical but kind. It works. Neil is an excellent teacher, partly because he knows how to put a group of people together and get them to excel, each in their own best way.
- Lucinda Meade

Neil’s classes are a great way to take your screenplay to the next level, whatever stage in the process you are at. His comments are insightful and he challenges you to keep digging into your plot, your characters, you story’s structure until you write something that works!
- Christina Fotinelli

I’ve been on many courses for various things, including screenwriting. The element that’s usually missing is expertise. Tutors, however accomplished, often go through the motions. Neil’s course was disturbing in a good way as it made me re-evaluate my storytelling. It made me work through weaknesses rather than just hope no one would notice them. I moved out of my comfort zone and re-energised my writing. Neil has expertise in unlocking ideas, concepts and process. He delivered the course in a very structured but informal way. It was a thoughtful and well planned course.
- John Pereira

Neil's course got me in a room with some really interesting people working on exciting scripts. At all stages, Neil took a point of view on the work that moved it forward. Also, the other writers were very much committed to their work and, in a healthy way, those of the other writers. That's good because writers need to collaborate and learn from each other. Neil's the real deal on the page and in the room. The course got a short screenplay out of me and moved me further along in my career.
